Fat person’s Hell

pg.29 “Picture a fat person’s hell, and I don’t mean a place with no food. Instead there is everything you might eat if eating had no bodily consequences–the cheese fries, the chicken fried steaks, the fudge laden desserts–only here every bite must be paid for, one way or another, in human discomfort.”

The reason why I took this quote was because I thought it was surprisingly true, when we eat a huge thanks giving dinner, we always regret those last few bites. Saying once again to aunt Susy that there is no way in hell that you would be able to huff down her warm piece of apple pie. Personally year after year I tell myself, to just leave the kitchen when guests arrive, and the addurves, start coming out of the oven and start popping into those mouths of guests. The game or the parade is always on, or a good game of poker is always brought upon by those that are unwilling to be memorized with the scallop wrapped with bacon, or the broccoli bites, that my mother makes for absolutely EVERYTHING. Thanksgiving, or any dinner party that involves tons of food is my Fat Mans Hell.

In the Novel, Nickel and Dimed, there is a journalist who applys for one  dead end job to another, only paying minmum wage, or just a few more dimes. With in the story so far, it talks about the differenent intreviews that she goes through. And some of the questions they ask. The quote that I found was on the top of page 14 and it reads -” The interview is multiple choice : Do I have anyhting such as child care problems, that might make it hard for me to get to work on time? Do you think Safety on the job is the responsiblity of managemet…”  I wish I was this intelligent to manage to pass the “test” with flying colors, able to work for this amazing company. I have personally not been on an official Interview, for the job I have now, all started when I went with my brother to pick of his friend, I met Richard’s dad, shook his hand, looked at me, and walked away. I said, ” Your dad seems nice”  exaggerating  just a bit. The next day he called me and offered me a job, i said sure. My interview with him was, just him asking questions about what I’ve done in the past for work. I had gotten the job just because I shook his hand.

Blog #6 Sam’s Cult

“We begin with a video, about fifteen minutes long, on the history and philosophy of Wal-Mart, or as an anthropological observer might call it, the Cult of Sam.” -pg 143

As we walk into walmart, many of us dont think about what happens behind the closed doors, or second guess why their prieces are so low. We should question about how many families work there, working minum pay, getting only two 15 minute brakes in their 8 hour shift. While we all shop there thinkinig it’s the greatest place on earth, because we can buy $20 items for as low as $10.99. No one decides to share anything  about these interesting facts, unless were in their shoes. Thank goodness for Barbra, I’m not sure my experence in Wal Mart will ever be the same, knowing what I do know now. knowing how awful the working conditions are.

” so this is tge home from which I go forth on monday to begin my life as a walmartaian ”

Walmartairan,noun- a person who works, lives, and breathes walmart

Barbra talks about through out the book that her life while working minum wage jobs. how much it sucks and how awful it is to try and with all the people that work at walmart, with how awesome they think their job is. The same thing came in contact while working at jerry’s the co-worker says that she is so lucky that the boss is letting her park her truck behind harthside, that this is such an awesome job that she would not want to give up this job to change working for higher pay at jerry’s.

pretty pathertic, or sad, that people make choices in there lives that they can’t afford anything.

images-1I’m eighteen years old, I’ve only been working in the work force for 4 years, I have nothing to pay for expect car maintenance and insurance. And I’m propbably way better off with working my part time job then half the people that have families to raise. And have reliteves working until they just about die of exaustion, something is defenallty wrong with the way things are being runned with government and socical syetems. to many of our rules are in their hunky dory large houses, having no idea the way the same people they hier to work for them, while they work for these rich families, their own familes are suffering.

“…I learned while I was at Jerry’s, Don’t stop, don’t think, don’t even pause for an instant, because if you do, you’ll  be aware of the weariness taking over your legs and then it will win.”

I chose this quote because of the subject of the story, it’s interesting to me that people could do that  day after day. Personally I have been a waitress, or have been on my feet all day. We have church dinners which start at 8 in the morning and then go till late that night. We start off by preparing foods that we will be serving, standing side by side along the counters. Next is setting up and setting the tables,  lifting and moving 50lb collapse able tables, then setting, running from one end of the church to the other, plates, napkins, and silverware. Then its the running around the town of Nelson, preparing, and picking up odds and ends. Next is the actual serving, running around talking, taking care of plates, and then i get pushed into the kitchen cause I’m small so I fit in the corner, able to lift and move each dish, hot with steam. Then there will be running from one end, putting back, and vacuuming and cleaning of the church.

Putting back everything that had been miss placed throughout the evening. Then all the linens are put into large garbage bags, then I rush home to start the laundry, then into bed, and when you just stop for an instant you feet ace. In the morning,  I get up and look at  my feet and just sigh….

As a group we had two really meaning full quotes that we came up with, describing the point of where Barbara is in the book.

“Do the ownrs have any idea of the misery that goes into rendering their homes motel perfect?”

I think that after they talk about the families, and what they explain how much effort goes into what they do. Washing floors on thier hands and keenes, a haard stone floors, pain full along with drentched with sweat and water that has “cleaned” the whole house. I thought it was interesting when in the book they talked about how  discrimnating it is if ypu  ask hired help to get on their hands and keenes. Something that I’ve thought about. I don’t understand why the owers of the homes don’t look into what the companies are really using around family and pets.

” How many people, other then fugitives and  refugees, ever get to do something like this- blow off all past relationships and routines, say good bye-bye to those mounds of un answeres mail and voicemail messages, and start all over again.”

She has a good point, only people that don’t “care” about their familes or do something dumb to get thier lives in a pickle, so it is nessary for them to start over. Barbra does not have that situation. She is doing this to do ” old fasioned journalizm” at the beginging of the book they talk about how she was too old to do something like this knowing that she would need energy to keep up with the new people she would be working for. She says several times how exausted she is after a long day or shift, knowing that she would just need to get back up and do it again the next day.

Playing a prank

Pranks, may be the greatest thing. I grew up with my twin brother and my nanny’s two brothers. I was the only girl ever, building forts, playing with potao guns, making bowen arrows out of bushes. I probably had the greatest childhood. So all those moments that I spent rejecting invitations to go freak out the nirghbors by making wolf noises, I know that I would be the next victum. even though I was not the quiteest while trying to follow through with the actvities, it was still the greatest thing seeing the look on peoples faces.

One prank that our nieghbor played on us was, we had this fort, it was a bush, she was cleaning up after her new dog, and we were all going to jump out of the bush, this bush was 20ft by 10 ft tall. and she would throw the dog poop into the bush, it smelled bad after that, that was the last day we ever played in that fort. so we just built a new one.

Revenge

Revenge, sounds scary! Will someone do it to you? Are you going to do it to someone else? either way you have to plan and conquer! ( Conquer, plan how you will escape the revenge of your enemy) How are you going to get revenge on your enemy?

I personally have never had to get revenge on anyone, and i don’t think that anyone has ever needed to get revenge over something that I did to them.  There is one thing that my twin brother and I say alot and use is, ” pay back is a bitch!” used when normally he did something to me like, when we were little,” I’ll pay you a dollar if you put away my clothes or take the dog out” then when I went back to collect my new investment, He would simply say, ” we didn’t shake on it. ” And walk away like he didn’t do anything wrong. That would make me so angry! So I started doing the same, except making huge requests, like I’ll give you ten bucks if you do the cat box!  And then he would nag on me, so that ended that! He’s never done it again! But revenge, could be simply life threatening, or just plan argument’s.

A friend in need

A freind in need, what sort of thing comes to your mind when you read this? Death in the family, or life crisis, where do you start?

In my mind I think of life crisis, like something bad happened in your family, or in your life. Your sister shot herself, and then fell of the buliding, and her wishes were not to be creamated, and now your parents decide to do that because her body is so discomborlated. Or you cold need a friend to help you out with something, maybe you just had six babies in one pregancy, and then you need your friends help to keep you sane, to do your laundry.

Whatever the deal is with needing that friend, there wil always be that one person wil be there. unless, of course you are that person that absolutely has no friends, you are that rain man, who can name everyday, every question, and is capable of answering every question with a cinfiedent answer.

What is a true friend, i think abou the shoe friends, where the seven of them, always gathering, always talking, maybe even the few arguments. No matter  what they go through the group still agsists. I think is wonderful and I long for  a group like that in my life, but not everything we see is like a tv show. If it was we would get bored with tv, and have nothing to envy

Controlling parents

When i think of controlling parents, all i can think of is kids or young adults complaining about them. Sitting at the lunch table, my parents are making be stay home this weekend cause I didn’t do what they asked me to do. At times i do belive that my parents are a little ridiculous at times, like when Ian and I are just being us, or sometimes my mother really just gets overwhemled about simply disapling us or asking each of us to do things. I am a twin, so when my mother yells at me for not having something done, I simply state, What bout Ian> Normally she would leave me alone, other times she says this is not about him.

I think that controling parents really have nothing else better to do then control what their child or children are doing. Strict parents are simply looking out for their kids and they want what’s best,  and  really care that their child doesn’t end up completely screwing up in all ways. Parents
